More on Floreana

As we walked further along, we came to a beautiful olivine beach. We saw turtle nesting sites where the sea turtles come up to lay their eggs. We were greeted by a funny blowfish sign.

We saw tons of the Sally Lightfoot crabs all over the black volcanic rock. We wanted to get a picture to show the many colors of the crab - excuse the fogginess! The babies are black and match the rocks, but as they get older, they develop these beautiful colors.

We went later to Post Office Bay. This was an old site where the pirates would come and leave messages for others. It is used now for tourists to leave postcards to be picked up by other travelers. We picked up two postcards (one for California and one for Tennessee) and will send them when we get home.

There was a beautiful beach at Post Office Bay where I was able to relax, read and sleep a bit. The crew from the boat came on land to a soccer field and Scott joined them in a soccer match. I relaxed a lot, but also saw some great wildlife activity. I saw my first penguins here in the water, floating on top and then diving down into the water to fish. They were fishing right along with pelicans. Monica told us that they work in harmony together for their fishing. It was great to watch! As I walked along the beach, I also walked within 3 feet of a huge pelican just staring at me.

Later in the day, we had time to just lay on the boat as we sailed to another island. Scott took the time to listen to music and listen to the ocean and I got to chat with other girls on the boat. It was a great afternoon. Many birds took up residence on the boat as well. You can see here a pelican on the front and a friggot bird up above.
