Cataratas

I also forgot to mention in the last post that we saw amazingly HUGE butterflies! You know those blue morphoes that you see only in glass frames and you wonder if you are ever going to see them flying around you? Well, we saw them! They were too fast to get pictures, but it made me almost cry because I was so happy. :D On the second part of the hike, we saw waterfalls and streams. At this first place, there was a tiny waterfall in a stream and we saw people sitting around in bathing suits. I didn´t have a bathing suit, but decided to swim anyway in my underclothes. The water was cold, but it felt great!

As we walked a little bit further, we began to get hungry and took out a peanut butter granola bar that we had brought along. All of a sudden, we heard a lot of rustling in the trees and saw a monkey a little ways off. Then, suddenly, we saw many white faced monkey and they were all coming towards us! There was one not 5 feet in front of us just staring at us eating our bars. I´m surprised they didn´t come grab them out of our hands. It was quite amazing.

We were walking to a waterfall (catarata), but were not sure there was going to be much water since it´s in the dry season right now. We walked through some dry fields that looked like desert, but then met some people along the way who told us to keep walking and that it was amazing. It was so beautiful. We got to this huge waterfall with a beautiful pond of water at the bottom that was so clear and that you could swim in. Scott even got in this time.

We also saw a couple of Costa Rican raccoons (coatimundis). They have longer snouts than their American counterparts. This is the best pic I could get.

Watch out for the monkeys...they tend to throw their poop at people. And snatch granola bars in exchange for the poop.

Tiffany - we were on your bus out of La Fortuna, Costa Rica, and ended up with your backpack. It is the same as my girlfriend´s. (I apologize that this is an awkward way to meet . . .)

Please contact me - drewstuyvenberg@gmail.com - or at the Hotel Pacande in Alajuela, 443-8481 or 440-4287. We are in room 2, and we are leaving Costa Rica in the morning.

Love the pictures, and I hope to hear from you soon! My apologies.

Best,
